Do you long for the “good old days" where neighbors stuck together and arts, culture, commerce, and community were booming on the 52nd Street Corridor? What was the neighborhood like when folks like John Coltrane, Gus Lacy, Foo Foo Ragan, Lee Morgan, and community activist Novella Williams walked these streets? And what exactly was in the Foo Foo Steakhouse “mama-jamma” sandwich!?
Join the Painted Bride and Voices of 52nd Street: Then & Now's lead artist, Pamela Hooks, for a special collaborative Memory Salon, "Telling Our Stories from “Back in the Day,'" in tandem with All That Jazz Philly’s 52nd Street Stroll.
The Memory Salon will take place at the Painted Bride’s Market Street location and is free and open to the public. Participants will have the option to purchase tickets for "West Philly’s Main Street: A Walk Through Time" walking tour, to join us for the Memory Salon, or attend both.
Take full advantage of this opportunity to break bread and bring your special stories as we share meaningful memories of 52nd Street in a warm communal setting, with residents, shop owners, artists, community members, history buffs, and the intellectually curious! All are welcome to attend and participate.
Special guests include Yasuhiro “Fuji” Fujioka, co-author of “The John Coltrane Reference,” and owner of the Coltrane House of Osaka, Japan; Pamela Hooks; and Faye Anderson, director of All That Jazz Philly.
Light bites catered by Steve’s Sports Lounge (formerly the location of the Red Rooster jazz club).
